The Royal Palace (Residenzschloss) in the heart of the Old Town is the place of origin and centre of the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD). The Dresden Royal Palace has been likewise expanded by a grandiose hall and an important exhibition area. The main hall of the Dresden Royal Palace shines in a new guise - 280 years after its disappearance in 1733 - with the opening of the new Hall of Giants (Riesensaal). The new Hall of Giants will become the venue for a selection of objects from one of the world’s most precious collections of ceremonial weapons, armour and costumes. With a length of 57 metres and a width of 13 metres, the monumental size of the armoury in the Hall of Giants not only provides the opportunity to present a selection of its most important armours and weapons ranging from the late 15th to the 17th century, but also to stage this scene in accordance with the former utilisation of the objects. Well over 350 objects, which are stylishly depicted in precisely made display cabinets, will be presented in the Hall of Giants. In particular, the technically high standard and the perfect appearance, such as the extra white anti-reflective 16 mm safety glazing which almost imperceptibly shrouds the precious objects, distinguishes the display cabinets. The display cabinets were constructed and air-conditioned according to high technical expertise. The display cabinet door is only controlled by a pivot point in the upper area of the display cabinet. The weight of 280 kg is borne on a single hinge inside the base behind glass. The inner base of the over 3.5 metre high standing display cabinets can be completely pulled out together with a horse. The horses are anchored in the substructure so that no optical mounting device is visible. The exhibit floors of the display cabinets consist of extremely low-maintenance, highly durable and optically beautiful, locally exploited Fruchtschiefer (coloured slate) slabs.
